Strategies for Success in Handling Cases Involving Self-Represented Litigants

Do you regularly appear in court opposite of Self Represented Litigants (SLR) and struggle with how to interact with them as you advocate for your client? While SLRs may present challenges and frustrations for the attorneys and judges involved, many litigants have no other choice but to represent themselves due to their inability to afford legal representation and the limits on the availability of free legal services. This panel discussion will explore the increasing number of SLRs in our courts and their impact on court proceedings as well as strategies for interacting with SLRs and an overview of the resources that are available to assist the SLR population. Attendees will also hear how judges interact with SLRs and ways in which the court system is trying to address this increase. Panelists: Hon. Alison C. Conlon, Circuit Court of Cook County; Co-Chair, CBF Circuit Court Pro Se Advisory Committee Phillip J.
